This past weekend in NYC's Little Italy the Feast of San Gennaro celebrated its 85th birthday. And what better way to celebrate a birthday than to have a little cake. And by little I mean 2,150 pounds. Yes, this birthday cake weighed in at over a ton. I was lucky to get close to where the cake was being assembled early enough to get a few good shots. I knew going into the feast that on this day there would be a massive birthday cake, but I had no idea it would be this big. It took over two hours for the cake to be assembled layer by layer and fully decorated. Once completed and once the Happy Birthday song had finished... the slicing of the cake began. When I saw how big the cake turned out, my expectations of how good it would taste were very low. The Ferrara Bakery, who was responsible for the giant cake is held in high regards, but nonetheless I had my reservations. After what felt like riding a NYC subway during rush hour and trying to make your way from one end of the train to the other, I eventually got my piece of cake. Eventually I was able to eat in peace and I was pleasantly surprised. This 2,150 pound birthday cake tasted really good. I have no idea how they did it, but the cake itself was not dried out at all, it was actually spongy and moist. The frosting was also good, none of that cheap supermarket cake frosting that is disgusting and all sugar. One thing is for sure, I need to hunt down some of those little tricolor cookie like things that decorated the cake. Birthday cake at the San Gennaro Feast was a welcome change to the deep fried Oreo cookies.
